Arsenal join trio of fiercest rivals in pursuit of newly capped England star | Shoot

Gareth Southgate sparked even more debate surrounding his England squad this week when he named Brighton & Hove Albion defender Ben White as the man to replace the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold in his final 26-man squad for the Euros.

Many believed that Southgate’s squad was already saturated with defenders and that Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse, something of a set piece specialist, would be the more useful option.

White was named in the squad after an impressive full debut against Romania on Sunday evening, in which the Three Lions ran out 1-0 victors after an unconvincing performance in their final game before the tournament starts.

White was close to joining Leeds United permanently last season but a deal could not be agreed.

White, who was playing Championship football last season with Leeds United, could now be in line for a shock move to one of the Premier League’s big six, with four clubs reportedly competing to sign the Englishman.

According to The Mirror, Arsenal have joined Spurs, Liverpool and Man United in the race to sign the 23-year-old.

The defender is apparently valued at around £50 million, and Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, a long-time admirer of White, is reportedly keen on making a deal happen.

Arsenal are set to lose David Luiz, whose contract expires at the end of the month, and could also see Calum Chambers depart, meaning that they will need defensive reinforcements ahead of the new season.

A versatile player, White can be used at right back or centre back in either a two or three, and has also been utilised in midfield by Seagulls boss Graham Potter.

If called upon by Southgate this summer, White will be keen to showcase his abilities and could further demand for his signature.
